Promethean Power Systems designs and manufactures refrigeration systems for cold-storage applications in off-grid and partially electrified areas of developing countries. Our products enable food suppliers to reliably store and preserve perishable food items—such as milk, fruits and vegetables—without the need for expensive diesel-powered generators. We believe that creating a cost-effective solution for cold-chain food distribution in emerging markets is an excellent business opportunity that could also deliver enormous social and environmental benefits.
Promethean’s CSS is the most economical way to chill, store and transport fresh fruits, vegetables and other perishables. Chilling the fresh produce immediately at the source is the most optimal solution to India’s cold-storage challenge.Case Study
The TSS is the patent-pending technology behind all Promethean’s refrigeration products. Our TSS can store and release large amounts of thermal energy and can applied to cooling applications as varied as comfort cooling or fermentation control. Promethean can combine any of the above systems with solar power to reduce power consumption from the grid or provide additional backup for other electrical loads.
In 2014, Promethean commissioned an independent study to identify the trends and driving forces in today’s Indian dairy industry. The resulting industry study “Improving Diary Profitability Through Sourcing Higher-Quality Milk” showed a direct correlation between higher quality milk and higher operating margins. Please contact us if you’d like to receive a copy of this study.
Promethean Power Systems has installed over 100 milk chilling systems throughout rural India. Each system serves approximately 20-30 farmers who can now deliver more milk to quality conscious dairy processors. The dairies in turn collect more milk and produce higher value and higher quality products for Indian consumers.
"Running of diesel generators is capital-intensive and with prices climbing up, our costs have increased. Since deregulation of diesel will happen in the next one year, we have decided to go for an alternative energy option".
Rahul Kumar, former Managing
"We wanted a chilling system that could work without continuous electricity and generator sets, while factoring in our realities of collecting milk from thousands of small producers”. "With chillers that run on a thermal battery, we can save to the tune of Rs 6 a unit as compared to diesel gensets”.

Passion for making a difference: Sorin Grama and Sam White founded Promethean Power Systems in 2007 to address a large market need with an innovative solution that can have a positive impact on millions of people.
Sorin is co-founder and director at Promethean. He serves as the company’s Chief Technical Officer and is the principal inventor of the company’s patent-pending energy storage technology. Sorin graduated with a Masters of Science in Engineering & Management degree from MIT. While in Boston, he met his future co-founder, Sam White, and together they started Promethean Power in 2007. Sorin currently lives in Delhi where he is helping Promethean’s subsidiary ramp up production of milk chillers and adapt the energy storage technology to other cold-chain applications. He is originally from Romania.
Sam is co-founder and director at Promethean. He serves as the principal sales, marketing and business development officer. One of his proudest moments in his career was to witness the first farmer chill milk in a village in India without using a diesel generator. To help reach this milestone, Sam uses his rich network of business relationships to seek strategic partners, customers, employees, funding sources and publicity for Promethean. Sam received his BA from Union College in political science and is originally from Boston.
Promethean has been recognized over the years for its technical innovation and social impact. We are deeply grateful and inspired by these awards:
We are thankful for the tremendous support we’ve received over the years from many private and government organizations. Our investors include a number of angel investors and investment funds looking to maximize social, environmental and business impact in developing countries.
Our partners include, among others:
